Rework: Everything you Need to Know
Rework is the repair of electronics that requires removing the soldered components via desoldering, and then re-soldering SMT components. This often occurs due to poor solder joints or misplaced or broken components that needs to be replaced. Steps for Rework Step 1: Preheating In order to remove the original components from the board, the solder first needs to be heated and melted (aka reflow). A hot air tool is usually used to expose the targeted component/area of the board to high heat to melt the solder. However, sudden or prolonged... Read more...
Equipment needed for Rework
Commonly used items for rework includes: Hot air stations: Specialised tool (Hakko FR-810B, FR-811) to melt the solder (reflow) and vacuum pick-up individual components on the board. A hot air handpieces allows for simultaneous melting and picking up of components with the suction pad and vacuum. With a wide variety of nozzle shapes, you can pick up many different shape and sizes of components. Pre-heaters: Suitable for double-sided, multilayered or large PCBs, a pre-heater ensures the entire board (or specific segments) is heated up evenly and quickly for removal of... Read more...

Temperature Calibration for HAKKO FX-888DX
Calibration is required when the set temperature is not reflected accurately in actual output of the tip (as measured with a tip thermometer). This means that there is a deviation of set temperature and actual tip temperature.  Why is there a difference? When switching between different shapes of soldering tips, it is common for the actual tip temperature to deviate from the set temperature on the soldering station. This happens as the tip shape and size contributes to its thermal capacity, and a change in tip could affect the actual... Read more...
How to Change Temperature on Hakko FX-888DX?
The Hakko FX-888DX is the updated version of the all-time favourite FX-888D. Instead of 2 buttons, the FX-888DX now features a turning knob which also acts as a button, which makes temperature setting and changing so much easier!  Selecting Temperature Turn the knob to change set temperature(Factory Default: 350°C)Turn until the display shows the desired temperature Once the display shows the desired temperture, push the knob in to select. The new temperature is now set Read more...

Improve your Soldering & Desoldering Process
Improve your Soldering Avoid excessive temperature settings. Select the correct soldering tip for the job. Maintain solder tips properly. Use the appropriate cleaning method for lead-free solders (599B-02 Tip Cleaner). Improve your Desoldering Choose a desoldering nozzle with an inside diameter that matches the lead diameter closely. Ensure the outside diameter of the nozzle matches the PCB pad diameter. Hold the desoldering nozzle vertically at 90 degrees to the PCB surface for a good seal and maximum vacuum force. Use an underboard heater if necessary to reduce desoldering time. Maintain the... Read more...
